检查井是地下管道中重要的构筑物，对城市功能的发挥，环境保护和人民生活有着重要影响，但是，我国传统主要用粘土砖砌筑，用材和施工工艺都比较落后，砖砌检查井成为市政排污管道系统的一大质量薄弱点，延缓了管道施工技术的进步。无论是市政排水管还是住宅排水管,埋设一段 40m 长的管道,通常只需要几个小时,而砌一座砖砌检查井却需要2天。其中混凝土基础及养护起码要1天,砌井、抹面、做流槽又需要半天甚至一天,大型检查井甚至要2天以上。为了改变砖砌检查井缺点,近十多年来,一些城市进行了许多预制检查井的研制和推进工作，预制检查井是提高排水管道质量水平的必由之路。
